“Make Mine Freedom” is a 1948 short film produced by Harding College to raise awareness of the dangers of Communism and Fascism, as well as state control for the “good” of the people (which is bad for the people and good for the state). It features a snake oil salesman, Dr. Utopia, selling bottles of “ISM” which promises to do everything, even make “the weather perfect every day.” All it requires is that you give up “everything I have including my freedom and the freedom of my children, and my children’s children, in return for which, said ISM promises to take care of me forever.”

The thrust of the exposé is the Iran-Contra arms and drug-running operations which flooded the streets of our nation with crack cocaine. The significance of the documentary is probably greater today in 2007 than it was when it was made. We now have a situation in which these same forces have committed the most egregious terrorist attack on US soil and have declared a fraudulent so-called “War on Terror”. The ruling regime in the US who have conducted the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, are now banging the war drum against Iran. We have the PATRIOT act which has stripped us of many of our basic civil rights justified by the terror of 9/11 which is their own doing.

In this 1994 interview with Charlie Rose, late billionaire Sir James Goldsmith – the real-life inspiration behind the character of British financier Sir Laurence Wildman in Oliver Stone’s classic film, “Wall Street” – predicts the economic turmoil that has stricken industrialized countries since the passage of GATT. It’s probably safe to say that the representative from Clinton’s economic council who debated him during this interview would not accept an offer to reengage with him on this issue again 15 years later, were Goldsmith still alive.

Goldsmith also briefly mentions the huge derivatives problem, noting that the world GDP was $30 trillion while the total market for derivatives was $90 trillion. RIP, Sir James Goldsmith. Respect.
