Google Already Seeking China Compromise

As we noted this weekend, it appears that Google took its China threat a few words too far.
By painting the issue in black and white–stop censoring us or we leave–Google has backed itself into a corner. The Chinese government can’t let Google stay without looking weak. Google, meanwhile, can’t drop its threat and stay without looking pathetic.
Google appears to be trying to tiptoe out of this trap by possibly shutting down its Chinese language search engine–the one it has been censoring–while preserving its sales and technology operations in China.
